Sochi residents state poor authorities' help during flooding

As stated by local residents, there was no warning about the upcoming flooding in Sochi; rescuers and utilities services failed to reach some localities; and rural residents had to cope with the consequences of the calamity on their own. There are people among them, who have not yet received any compensation for the past floods, which regularly affect the city.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 25 Sochi was affected by flooding that damaged primarily the Adler and Khosta Districts.

The Adler District is still under the state of emergency mode, Djambulat Khatuov, the Vice-Governor of the Krasnodar Territory, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"In total, 800 houses were flooded. It was the heaviest rain for the whole history of meteorological observations. According to preliminary data, the damage from the disaster amounted to 300 million roubles," said Khatuov.

According to the pensioner Nikolai Polyanchikov, water stood in houses for almost 24 hours. In the morning, having no hope to see any help from the authorities, people themselves began liquidating the consequences of the flooding.

"We've lived for 24 hours in water reaching the waist; all our things are spoiled. Last year we already drowned; but received no compensation," Vera Polyanchikova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The population was not warned about the flooding, Natalia Kalinovskaya, the chair of the self-government unit named "Psou", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
