Five inmates of Kutaisi prison go on hunger strike

In Western Georgia, five inmates of Prison No. 2, located in the city of Kutaisi, has gone on hunger strike in protest against their verdicts.

According to the Penitentiary and Probation Ministry of Georgia, the hunger-strikers are under close medical supervision. Doctors treat their health condition as stable, the "Sputnik-Georgia" reports with reference to its source from the above Ministry.

The hunger-strikers protest against their conviction; however, their demands are beyond the competence of the Ministry, said the source.

The "Echo of the Caucasus" adds that the above five prisoners were sentenced to imprisonment from four to five years on charges of resistance, threat or violence against a person, busy with protecting the public order.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that in June this year three inmates of Tbilisi Prison No. 7 committed self-mutilation in protest against the refusal to transfer them to another prison. Before that, in June, 10 inmates of the prison in Rustavi held a hunger strike, demanding review of their cases.
