NGO doubts of authorities' will to protect freedom of speech

Ashot Avetisian and Grair Arutyunian, who used violence against journalists during an opposition meeting on April 5, stood trial on June 10. This trial was only an illusion with relation to the protection of freedom of speech and show of equality among all people in the face of the law. The Association of Investigative Journalists has issued such a statement. According to the document, the appearance of skinheads in the courtroom, abuse and threats are evidence that the criminals are non-punishable and the authorities do not show will to protect freedom of speech. The court meted out mild punishment as a result. As reported by the association, the skinheads prevented journalists from entering the courtroom and abused them. In particular, they abused Sona Mashurian, a Noyan Tapan correspondent, when she asked them not to hamper her work. Police officers who were in the courtroom joined the disorderly persons, reads the statement.
