One of leaders of Ingushetia attacks killed

A leader of one of bands that mounted attacks on law enforcement offices in Ingushetia on June 22 has been killed in a special operation. A spokesman for the regional prosecutor?s office told Itar-Tass on Monday that Magomed Yevloyev resisted arrest with arms. A submachine-gun and a grenade-launcher were found on his body. Chechen Interior Ministered Alu Alkhanov earlier had said that Yevloyev was one of organizers of the attacks that left 98 people dead, Including 47 workers of law enforcement agencies, and more than 100 injured. The hit and run attacks were simultaneously staged in Nazran, Karabulak and the village of Sleptovskaya. The interior minister said Yevloyev commanded an ?Ingush part of the gunmen?. A band that came to Ingushetia from Chechnya was led by field commander Doku Umarov.

?According to operational information, the general leadership of the operation was accomplished by Shamil Basayev and Aslan Maskhadov,? Alukhanov said, referring to a known warlord and to Chechnya?s former president. ?Certainly, the actions of the gunmen were aimed at destabilisation of the situation in the Ingush republic,? he said.
