Baku experts: conflict may be resolved after meeting of Ilham Aliev and Serzh Sargsyan
The Vienna meeting of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev and Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has become neither a breakthrough nor a failure in attempts to resolve the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. However, the meeting can become a basis for advancing the peace process and achievement of the political settlement of the conflict. This opinion has been expressed by Azerbaijani experts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot".
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 16, Vienna hosted the meeting of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev, with the participation of Foreign Ministers of the countries co-chairing the OSCE Minsk Group.
Eldar Namazov, an Azerbaijani expert, the leader of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, has expressed "cautious optimism" about the progress in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.
According to Eldar Namazov, in addition of the agreement on the introduction of measures for creation of mechanisms to investigate incidents, the parties have agreed to hold a meeting in June with the aim of resuming negotiations on comprehensive settlement of the Karabakh problem.
The Azerbaijani expert has also added that in case if the negotiation process halts again, the Azerbaijani army may again take measures of peace enforcement.
According to Togrul Djuvarly, the leader of the Azerbaijani National Public Committee for European Integration, the liberation of regions around Nagorno-Karabakh can launch the process of return of refugees and start of regional cooperation, and that will create favourable background for the development of the final status of the region.
