Residents of NCFD and CFD celebrate Day of Russia without the idea of its meaning
According to the poll conducted by the "Levada-Centre", less than half of Russians – 44% – are aware that June 12 is the national holiday – the Day of Russia. On June 12, 1990, the declaration was adopted, thanks to which the country exists as such, Maksharip Yandiev, a social activist, believes.
On June 12, 1990, the First Congress of People's Deputies of the RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic) adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty. On the same day in 1991, the presidential election was held, won by Boris Yeltsin.
According to Nikita Sokolov, the Deputy Executive Director for Science of the B. N. Yeltsin President's Centre, currently, "the legend of the holiday is completely absent," and "some rituals should be devised to accompany this holiday."
The adoption of the Declaration of Russia's State Sovereignty "actually saved the former Soviet Union space of a full-scale civil war," Mr Yandiev believes.
Today, Chechnya plans to hold – in front of the mosque "Heart of Chechnya" in Grozny – a gala concert "Russia – Our Common Home".
Kabardino-Balkaria will host a high-altitude race "Bezengi Skyrace", the TASS reports.
The Stavropol Territory will hold the first rock festival of Cossack songs.
Karachay-Cherkessia will host a festive event – marchers will carry a Russian's banner with an area of almost 200 square meters across the central Cherkessk, the capital of the republic, the "Interfax" reports.
Kuban (the Krasnodar Territory) will hold about 200 cultural and sport events. According to the territorial administration, it is expected that the festive concert will be attended by 10,000 people, the "Yug-Times" reports.
