Separatist ideologist stands trial in Dagestan

The trial against Abdulla Aliev, known under the literary name Adallo, is underway at the Supreme Court of Dagestan. Aliev is charged under three articles of the Criminal Code: organization of an armed revolt, membership in illegal armed units, and illegal carrying of arms. But during the trial, which is taking place in Makhachkala, Adallo refuses to admit his membership in illegal armed units and the organization of the armed revolt.

Adallo began to publish the Banner of Islam newspaper in early 1990s and entered the circle of Chechen separatists little by little. Interpol declared him wanted after the rebel attack on Dagestan. He hided out in Georgia and Turkey and then gave himself up to Dagestani authorities in early June 2004. He flew in from Istanbul to Makhachkala, went to the republican prosecutor's office, and wrote a corresponding statement.
