Karaulova reports her marriage to militant

Today, Varvara Karaulova said at the court session that her marriage by means of the Skype to a militant, who was then in the territory of Syria, was concluded in retaliation to the alleged recruiter Airat Samatov.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that from October 5 the Moscow District Military Court is considering the case of Varvara Karaulova (Alexandra Ivanova), a student of the Moscow State University (MSU), accused of attempting to participate in a terrorist organization in Syria.

On June 4, 2015, Varvara Karaulova, a student of the Moscow State University (MSU), was detained at the Turkish-Syrian border among other citizens of Russia, including natives of Chechnya and Dagestan, and citizens of Azerbaijan, who, according to the investigators, intended to join the "Islamic State". During the preliminary investigation, Alexandra Ivanova pleaded guilty; however, later she retracted her confession.

During the today's session, Karaulova told the court that in April 2015 she "got married over the Internet." According to her story, the marriage was concluded through the Skype with a man, who was in Syria. Karaulova confessed that she decided to get married in order to avenge her lover, the alleged recruiter Airat Samatov, about whom she felt jealous to another girl.

"I learned from my husband that he was a member of 'Imarat Kavkaz' (this organization was declared a terrorist one and banned in Russia by the court, – note of the "Caucasian Knot")," said Karaulova.

However, later, as she claimed, Karaulova again became close with her lover Airat Samatov, and she regarded her marriage concluded via the Skype with the militant from Syria invalid. "The husband sent me the money for a flight to Turkey for a further travel to Syria," she told the court, adding that later she returned the money.

  • Lawyers doubt prospect of bills banning religious clothes

The bills that intend to ban wearing religious clothing, including niqabs, in public places are causing a split in the society, which is especially negative amid the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine. Religious clothes are not widespread in the country, this issue is not relevant, therefore the bills to ban them will not be adopted, lawyers believe.
