UN dissatisfied with human rights situation in Azerbaijan

The United Nations is concerned about the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, Director of the Institute of Peace and Democracy Leyla Yunus told the Caucasian Knot correspondent. In her words, there were talks about it at the November 8-19 session of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) in Geneva, during which the Azerbaijan Government gave a report on the implementation of the Geneva Pact.

In addition to the government's report, alternative reports were submitted to the committee by non-governmental organizations, Ms Yunus said. Committee members remained dissatisfied with the report presented by the Azerbaijan Government since they were not given answers to the questions about the persecution of people by political motives, violations of citizens' rights by foreign companies, state of the press and judicial system, she noted. The committee members noted they would send their questions to the Azerbaijan Government.
