Sixty relatives of missing residents of Chechnya receive genetic passports

The total number of passports, issued for establishing the kinship with the persons, who disappeared during the military campaigns in Chechnya, when the remains are discovered, has exceeded 500. The last batch of passports was issued on March 14.

"The event was also attended by members of the Public Chamber, the peacemaking mission named after General Lebed, and the staff of the regional public organization ‘Search for Missing Persons’," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told at the Ministry for National Policy, Information and Press of Chechnya.

The issuance of genetic passports to relatives of the people missing in the course of hostilities began in the spring of 2013. The previous ceremony of issuing such passports was held in Grozny in October last year.

Many residents of Chechnya are convinced that during the two military campaigns, at least 15-20 thousand people disappeared.

The process of issuing genetic passports takes certain amount of time, the republic’s Bureau of Forensic Examination has noted. The DNA assays for relatives of missing persons are free of charge.

In recent years, there were several cases in the republic, when relatives managed to find the remains of their relatives with the help of genetic passports. In 2014, they managed to identify the remains of two residents of Chechnya, buried outside the republic; and in December 2016, two other missing persons were established at the burial near Grozny of remains of more than 100 persons, delivered from Rostov-on-Don.
