Defence of Abbas Guseinov appeals to ECtHR with complaint about torture

An advocate of Abbas Guseinov, Deputy Chairman of the movement "Muslim Unity", sentenced in Azerbaijan in the "Nardaran case", has filed a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) about torture used against his client.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 25, in Baku, the court pronounced the verdicts of guilty against Talekh Bagirzade, the leader of the movement "Muslim Unity", and his 17 supporters who were involved as defendants in the case of the riots in the Azerbaijani town of Nardaran. Talekh Bagirzade and his deputy Abbas Guseinov were sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment.

According to advocate Fariz Namazly, on March 26, he sent an official letter to the European Court of Human Rights with a complaint about torture used against Abbas Guseinov.

"In our complaint, we raise questions about the use of torture against Abbas Guseinov in various episodes. For example, he was subjected to torture already during his detention in the course of a special operation carried out in the village of Nardaran on November 26, 2015. Being wounded, he was beaten in a car, which was transporting detainees. Then, the torture was continued at the Chief Department for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). They used torture against Abbas Guseinov to force him to testify against himself and against Talekh Bagirzade, the leader of the movement 'Muslim Unity'," said advocate Fariz Namazly.
