Local government enforces media restrictions

The government of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic passed new Journalists Accreditation Rules earlier this month. In particular, they provide for applying for accreditation to the press service for the president and government. Enclosed with the application must be copies of a journalist's three articles about executive activities. The press service has one month to decide on accreditation and must submit it for approval to the chief of staff for the president of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.

"The use of unethical expressions" is mentioned in the Rules among other reasons for a journalist to be denied accreditation, along with the publication of false information discrediting the president and government of the republic.
