Law enforcement agents targeted in Dagestan
Visali Orzumiyev, a chief operative at the Khasaviurt Department for the Combating of Organised Crime, was shot by unknown attackers using automatic weapons in the yard of his own house late at night on 10 May and died of wounds in the hospital, according to ITAR-TASS.
The killing occurred in Simsir, Khasaviurt district, the Dagestani Department of Internal Affairs says. The officer's gun with two full magazines was taken.
Another attack occurred in the Untsukul district in the republic where criminals fired at the car of the local internal affairs chief on 10 May. The latter was not hurt, but two police officers were wounded as a result.
One police officer and a woman who was nearby were killed and another two women, passing by, were wounded as a result of an explosion in the capital of Dagestan, Makhachkala, on 11 May. The attack targeted Dagestani law enforcement agents, Polit.ru cites a source at the Internal Affairs Ministry of Dagestan. The killed officer had tried to pick up a suspicious packet traffic police officers had found not far from the buildings of the Department for the Combating of Organised Crime and the Sovetskii District Division of Internal Affairs.
More than 20 officers of Dagestani law enforcement agencies have been killed by criminals since the beginning of 2005. Operatives believe it is all about a secret terrorist group targeting police officers.
