Dagestani SC suspends construction of cathedral in Ak-Gel Park

Residents of Makhachkala have filed a claim against construction in a park near Ak-Gel Lake. Works on the construction of a cathedral are prohibited until the consideration of the claim is completed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in January 2016, residents of Makhachkala learned that the authorities had allocated one hectare of land in the park zone of the Reduktorny village for the construction of an Orthodox cathedral.

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan has banned the construction of the cathedral until the pronouncement of the decision concerning the claim filed by the city residents opposing the construction.

In their claim, the Makhachkala residents have stated that the construction violates their rights to favourable environment and unhindered access to Ak-Gel Lake. Most of the people who protested against the construction of the cathedral were Orthodox believers.
