Police violence punished in absentia

The Kutaisi regional court sentenced Ilya Nachkebia, former chief of criminal investigation in the Martvili district, and his subordinates Platon Jgarkava and Georgii Kharebava to a term in prison, News Georgia agency says.

The court returned its verdict in absentia as the three former police officers are currently on the wanted list. Nachkebia and Jgarkava are sentenced to four years and Kharebava to five years. They were declared guilty of beating and torturing a Martvili resident detained by law enforcement agencies in December 2003.

This is the eighth case in Georgia's judicial practice when police officers are held accountable for violating detainees' rights.
