US State Department urges Armenian authorities and opposition to negotiate

The USA has called on all political forces of Armenia to negotiate the formation of a new government and avoid violence.

At a rally on April 28, Nikol Pashinyan again called on his supporters to resume protest actions; and to hold, on May 1, the largest rally in Yerevan. The police have declared their readiness to suppress any "extremists' provocations."

The US State Department has welcomed the peaceful nature of oppositional actions in Armenia, and expects that the police and the protesters will manage to escape violence in the coming days, the Department's website reports.

The USA has also praised the efforts of the Armenian President Armen Sargsyan to set up a dialogue of all the stakeholders.

Since April 26, Armen Sargsyan has been holding meetings with the aim of "easing the domestic political tension." He met Nikol Pashinyan, the leader of the opposition, and Serzh Sargsyan, the leader of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA).
