On May 14-20, 2018, ten persons fell victim to armed conflict in Northern Caucasus
During the week of May 14-20, 2018, at least ten persons fell victim to the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. Of them, seven persons were killed and three others were wounded. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.
The death toll includes a civilian, two law enforcers and four suspected members of the armed underground, all of them in Chechnya.
Bombings and terror acts
On May 19, four militants tried to capture believers in the Church of Archangel Michael in the centre of Grozny. As a result of the attack, Senior Police Sergeants Kairat Rakhmetov and Vladimir Gorskov, two policemen who guarded the Church, were killed. The policemen were on a service mission, and they arrived in Chechnya from the Saratov Region. Two other policemen were wounded, and believer Artemy, who had come to Chechnya from Uzbekistan to find his relatives, was also killed. Fyodor Napolnikov, another believer, the head of the department of paediatric surgery and urology of the Gudermes Central District Hospital, was injured. Four militants were killed. They had knives and a smooth-bore gun. The attackers were identified as brothers Amir and Ali Yunusov and Mikail Elisultanov, natives of Chechnya, as well as Akhmed Tsechoev, a resident of Ingushetia. The Caucasian unit of the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS) banned in Russia by court's decision claimed responsibility for the attempt to capture believers in the Church in Grozny.
Detentions
On May 18, the court pronounced a decision to arrest a resident of the Gudermes District of Chechnya, suspected of selling a Kalashnikov submachine gun. According to the law enforcement bodies, the man sold the Kalashnikov submachine gun with ammunition to his friend.
