USA and EU criticize Syria's recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia
Syria's recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia violates the international law, the foreign policy service of the European Union (EU) has stated. The US State Department has supported the territorial integrity of Georgia.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Georgia condemned this step and announced a break of diplomatic relations with Syria.
Heather Nauert, the head of the US State Department's press service, has treated the Syria's decision as "unjustified" and stated that it "will not prevent the support of Georgia's territorial integrity," the "News-Georgia" reports.
"The United States condemn Syria's recognition of Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's independence and call on the Syrian authorities to recall the decision," Elizabeth Rood, the acting US ambassador to Georgia, has added.
According to her, the USA calls on Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru to abandon their recognition of independence of these territories.
Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on August 26, 2008. Georgia treats them as its territories occupied by Russia.
