Georgia breaks its diplomatic relations with Syria

The decision of the Syrian authorities to establish diplomatic relations with Abkhazia and South Ossetia was made under Russian pressure; it violates the fundamental norms and principles of the international law, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 29, the MFAs of Syria, South Ossetia and Abkhazia announced mutual recognition and established diplomatic relations. Georgia condemned the actions and announced the break of diplomatic relations with Syria.

On June 5, the Georgian MFA published an official announcement that diplomatic relations with Syria were stopped. The message says that the corresponding decision was made by the country's government on May 31.

The official note of the Georgian MFA about the break of diplomatic relations with Syria was sent to the Syrian diplomatic missions at the United Nations (UN) and in Egypt. The Georgia's Permanent Representative at the UN has notified the UN Secretary General about the termination of diplomatic relations with Syria, the MFA has reported.
