Suicide statistics in Abkhazia causes scandal in social networks

Since the start of 2018, 17 suicides have been registered in Abkhazia; nine of them in the last two months, Raul Lolua, an MP, wrote in his Facebook. Users of social networks believe that suicides are caused by financial problems; however, in most cases people could have been saved by specialists and the attention of relatives.

There was no information about these suicides in official criminal chronicles.

Facebook users are actively discussing the news posted by the MP, noting that such statistics frightens them.

"This is deadly statistics, given the population of our republic," wrote Manana Gurguliya, a user.

"Since the war, I've never experienced such fear – we're dying out," Fatima Kharchilava believes.

Many users blame the authorities for apathy and point to people's indifference to problems of their relatives.

"Poverty, despair, unemployment, spiritual crisis – reasons are in plenty, but who cares? We live in isolation, each in its own shell," wrote Richard Chkadua wrote.

"A human should not kill himself just because of lack of incomes; it's abnormal. There are many countries, where people die from hunger, but this does not lead to such phenomena," wrote the user Kamila Lii.

"There are a lot of reasons for the depression in Abkhazia: people fail to cope with their psycho-emotional stresses and get upset," Batal Shushaniya has noted.

  • Listeners outraged by closure of blogger Kharchenko*'s trial

Despite the defence's protest, a court in Gelendjik has ruled, at the request of the suffered party and the prosecution, to conduct the trial of Vadim Kharchenko*, a blogger, behind closed doors. Visitors to the court believe that this ruling is intended to conceal the absence of proofs for the presented charges and case falsifications.
