Election of Yerevan Mayor scheduled for July 16
Members of the "Elk" bloc proposed holding the early election of the Yerevan Mayor on August 8, but the Council of Elders supported the proposal of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) by a majority vote.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan announced his resignation on July 9. However, he did not explain why he made such a decision. The request for the Taron Margaryan's resignation from the post of Yerevan Mayor was voiced at protest rallies.
Today, in Yerevan, by majority of votes, the Council of Elders has approved the decision, according to which the early election of the City Mayor will be held on July 16. The proposal, initiated by the RPA, was supported by 35 delegates, while 11 voted against, and one delegate abstained. The proposal to hold the election of the Yerevan Mayor on August 8 voiced by the "Elk" bloc was not approved, since only 15 delegates supported it, with one delegate abstaining, the "NEWS.am" reports.
David Khazhakyan, a member of the Council of Elders from the "Elk" bloc, has noted that August is a bad month for pre-election campaigning, but politicians should be given time to prepare for the election, the "Sputnik-Armenia" reports.
According to the Law "On Local Self-Government in Yerevan", the Mayor should be elected from the Yerevan Council of Elders, the news agency "News-Armenia" reports.
With the resignation of Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan, the RPA lost its control over the capital, stated Armenian political analysts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot".
Let us remind you that the protests against Taron Margaryan intensified after the change of power in Armenia, when on May 8, Nikol Pashinyan, the opposition leader from the "Elk" bloc, was elected the Prime Minister.
