South Ossetia closes its border with Georgia

The checkpoints on South-Ossetian-Georgian border are closed from the evening on August 6 until the morning on August 9, during the events on the anniversary of the start of the "Five-Day War". This was reported on the Facebook by the Committee of State Security (KGB) of South Ossetia.

The KGB's press service has specified that the decision was made "in the context of the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Georgian aggression."

The war began at night on August 8, 2008, with a massive bombardment of Tskhinvali by Georgian artillery and the response of Russian forces in South Ossetia. The war lasted for five days.

The memorable events will be held on August 7 and 8, including the photo exhibition "The Light of Our Memory", and the actions "Memory Is Needed for Those Alive" and "Holy Places of Our Memory", during which the authorities and residents of South Ossetia will visit the places where defenders of Tskhinvali had perished and lay flowers, the "Sputnik Ossetia" informs.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 7-10, the checkpoints on the border with Georgia were also closed in connection with the May 9 celebrations. The US Department of State criticized that decision of South-Ossetian authorities.
