AI condemns extradition of refugee Farid Yusub from Russia to Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani refugee Farid Yusub, accused of theft, forgery of documents, and illegal crossing of the border, associated his persecution in Azerbaijan with his opposition views. The international human rights organization "Amnesty International" (AI) believes that at home, the refugee can be subjected to torture and unfair trial.

On August 15, Farid Yusub was extradited to Azerbaijan. At present, he is currently under investigation on the charges of theft, forgery of documents, and illegal crossing of the border.

"The Azerbaijani authorities must ensure that he will not be tortured and immediately released if no reliable evidence of the commission of a crime is submitted," announces the AI's statement received by the "Caucasian Knot".

The rights defenders have also stated that the investigation should be conducted in accordance with the international law, and Farid Yusub himself should be provided with an advocate, contacts with his family members, and the necessary medical care.

Farid Yusub has said that he was being persecuted because of his opposition views and personal conflict with of a top-ranking law enforcer. The accusations were filed in absentia after in September 2016, he gave an interview to the Russian service of the Radio Liberty, in which he condemned the political regime of Azerbaijan for persecuting critics.
