Detention of street musicians in Yerevan caused their colleagues' protest

In Yerevan, policemen detained two street musicians from Ukraine. The policemen's actions aroused indignation of detainees' colleagues, who staged a musical protest action. Lilit Makunts, the Minister of Culture of Armenia, has stated support of street musicians.

The solidarity action with street musicians took place on August 30 in central Yerevan in Northern Avenue. The action was attended by hundreds of residents of the Armenian capital, as well as musicians, who came with their instruments to support their colleagues, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports from the scene.

The protesters were indignant at the policemen's actions, who on August 29 detained street musicians in Northern Avenue. According to eyewitnesses, who wrote on the Facebook, policemen twisted the hands of one of the musicians and put him on the ground face down.

The place of the action was visited by Lilit Makunts, the Armenian Minister of Culture. She believes that songs of street musicians should be performed in Northern Avenue.

"This gives some specific colour to the city. Arts should be not only in theatres and museums, but also be shown in streets. People should receive aesthetic pleasure while walking along the street," Ms Minister told the "Caucasian Knot".
