Residents of Nagorno-Karabakh note high competition at by-elections to parliament

More than 50 percent of voters came to the by-elections to the parliament of Nagorno-Karabakh at the 10th and 11th precinct districts. According to local residents, these elections differ from the previous ones by the number of candidates participating in them. The growth of political activity is connected with the revolution in Armenia, believes Hayk Khanumyan, the leader of the opposition "National Revival" Party.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 4, Armo Tsatryan and Lernik Ovannisyan, members of the Nagorno-Karabakh parliament, announced their resignation. Fifteen candidates applied for two vacancies in the National Assembly, and additional elections were scheduled for September 9.

In his conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, Hayk Khanumyan, the leader of the opposition "National Revival" Party, said that "the revolution in Armenia influenced the public, as well as the atmosphere of the elections in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh)."

"For example, in 2012, in the course of additional parliamentary elections, there were one or two candidates in the district. And there are 15 candidates for two vacancies at these elections. That means the events in Armenia provided people in Artsakh with the opportunity to express their wishes freely and gave them confidence ... I do not know if that is bad or good, but that is a fact," Hayk Khanumyan noted.
