US Department of State and EU accept results of elections in Armenia

Today, the European Union (EU) has announced its willingness to work with the newly elected parliament of Armenia, since the principles of democracy had been observed during the elections. The US Department of State has noted that the parliamentary elections in Armenia were held in a free and competitive environment.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 9, residents of Armenia elected delegates to the parliament. Nine parties and two blocs took part in the early parliamentary elections. Observers reported dozens of violations committed during the voting. According to the results of the processing 100 percent of the ballots, the "My Step" bloc and the "Prosperous Armenia" and "Enlightened Armenia" Parties gained seats in the parliament.

The European Union has noted that the elections held in Armenia are important for strengthening public confidence in the electoral process in Armenia. "We expect all stakeholders to continue concerted efforts towards further democratization and modernization of the country," the "Sputnik Armenia" reports today with reference to the statement released by the press service for the spokesperson of the European External Action Service (EEAS).

The elections "were held with respect for fundamental freedoms and enjoyed broad public trust that needs to be preserved through further electoral reforms," the TASS quotes today the statement made by the spokesperson of the EEAS.

"We welcome the assessment by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights that Armenia's parliamentary elections were competitive and that candidates were able to campaign freely," the RIA "Novosti" quotes the statement of the US State Department today.
