ECtHR awards compensations to two inmates of Georgian prisons

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has recognized violations of the rights of two Georgian citizens, who failed to receive the necessary medical care in jails. The victims have been awarded compensation in the total amount of 19,500 euros.

Both convicts were serving their terms in Georgia about 10 years ago.

In the case of "Maisuradze versus Georgia", the ECtHR found that prison authorities failed to provide a sick inmate with the necessary treatment. As a result, in May 2009, he died, and the country's authorities failed to properly clarify the reasons for his death, the "Sputnik Georgia" reports today with reference to the case files.

The ECtHR found that Georgian authorities had violated the "Right to Life" Article of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and ordered that the family of the deceased should receive 15,000 euros.

After the consideration of the case "Kikalishvili versus Georgia", the ECtHR found that the convict, who had cataracts of his eyes before the imprisonment, received no proper treatment in jail, the "News Georgia" reports, citing the ECtHR's materials.

In this case, the court saw a violation of the article on the prohibition of cruel or degrading treatment in the authorities' actions and appointed a compensation of 4500 euros to the victim.
