Prosecution mitigates charges against Chechen law enforcers accused of kidnapping Khasavyurt resident

Two Chechen law enforcers accused of kidnapping Alexei Kardashov, a resident of the city of Khasavyurt, were transferred from SIZO (pre-trial prison) under house arrest; and the charge itself has been eased, the Committee against Torture (CaT) has reported. Israeli activists link the slip in the investigation with the interest of Chechen authorities.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Kardashov left home in Khasavyurt on September 14, 2017, and never returned. Investigators suggested that he was kidnapped.

In March 2019, two Chechen law enforcers were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and abuse of their powers with the use of violence.

The defendants were transferred under house arrest almost secretly, said Dmitry Piskunov, the head of the North-Caucasian branch of the CaT. He has recalled that two other law enforcers, who are hiding, as well as two civilians, are figurants in Kardashov's kidnapping and murder case.

The case of Kardashov, who was a mountain Jew by birth, is monitored by the Israeli organization "Shakh-Dag". Its members note that Jewish organizations in Russia have demonstrated complete indifference to the case.
