Relatives of arrested Derbent residents demand to inquire into their torture complaints
The mothers and an aunt of the three Derbent residents accused of terrorism, who have reported about torture, resumed their protest action in Makhachkala.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Islam Barzukaev and Gasan Kurbanov, residents of Derbent, as well as Mirzaali Mirzaliev, who was detained with them on June 15, 2019, were suspected of illegal dealing with arms and ammunition. In their turn, they have stated that they had signed their confessions under torture and threats. Later, they were additionally charged with the participation in an illegal armed formation (IAF), and then – with the creation of a terrorist community.
On June 24, mothers of Barzukaev and Kurbanov went on a hunger strike at the police building in Derbent demanding to release their sons. On July 9, they stopped their action due to aggravated health. Relatives of the detainees insist that Barzukaev and Kurbanov are innocent.
On January 27, relatives of Islam Barzukaev, Gasan Kurbanov and Mirzaali Mirzaliev held a solo picket in Makhachkala. Elena Barzukaeva and Aida Mirzalieva, the mothers of Barzukaev and Mirzaliev, as well as Zainab Rabadanova, a Gasanov's aunt, have made two posters and stood with them, by replacing each other, for about 30 minutes at the intersection of Rasul Gamzatov Avenue and Dakhadaev Street. One of the posters had an inscription demanding "to stop lawlessness in Dagestan"; the other poster accused the investigating bodies of protecting the law enforcers, who, according to the women, had tortured their sons.
