Health problems of arrested Derbent residents trigger new action
On February 10, relatives of the Derbent residents, accused of terrorism, held a picket demanding to stop lawlessness in the republic. Female relatives complained about health problems of those arrested, and about the obstacles to visiting them.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the residents of Derbent, Islam Barzukaev, Gasan Kurbanov, and Mirzaali Mirzaliev, were suspected of illegal arms and ammunition dealing. They have stated that they had been forced to sign confessions under torture and threats. Later, they were accused of participating in an illegal armed formation (IAF) and the creation of a terrorist community.
Relatives of those accused of terrorism insist that Barzukaev and Kurbanov are innocent. On June 24, 2019, their mothers went on a hunger strike near the police building in Derbent demanding the release of their sons; and on July 9, the women suspended their hunger strike because of poor health.
The new protest action was triggered by the ignoring of the demand to conduct a medical examination of Islam Barzukaev, his mother, Elena Barzukaeva, has explained. "My son's membranes are broken; he complains about pains in his back and heart. But no one pays attention to all my attempts to get a permit for conducting an examination, even at our own expense," she has added.
The complaints about Mirzaali Mirzaliev's health were reported by his mother, Aida Mirzalieva.
In June 2019, the Public Oversight Commission (POC) stated that it had recorded a bruise on Barzukaev; and all the three detainees had points on their hands looking like traces of torturing with electric current.
