Stepanakert resident pay tribute to victims of Sumgait pogroms
A ceremony of laying flowers in memory of victims of Sumgait pogroms was held at the Memorial Complex in Stepanakert. Housing problems of about 20 percent of refugee families have not been resolved yet, said Saro Saryan, the head of the NGO "Artsakh Union of Armenian Refugees from Azerbaijan".
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Armenia and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) are holding annual actions dedicated to victims of Sumgait pogroms. On February 28, 2019, refugees from Sumgait demanded to solve their housing problems.
After the events in Sumgait, hundreds of thousands of Armenians became refugees, the NKR's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has noted. "The international community should condemn the genocide of the peaceful Armenian population," the MFA of the unrecognized republic has stated.
The state helps refugees, however, "in the Republic of Artsakh (NKR) and in the Republic of Armenia, quite a many refugees suffer from social and psychological consequences of the genocide," Artak Beglaryan, the NKR's Ombudsperson, has stated.
"I hope that our new government will not only follow the example of Armenian authorities, but will do even more, because we have fewer refugees in need of housing than in Armenia," said Saro Saryan, head of the "Artsakh Union of Armenian Refugees from Azerbaijan".
