Azerbaijani rights defender Elchin Mamed suffers from aggravation of diseases in custody, his mother reports
The health state of Azerbaijani journalist and human rights defender Elchin Mamed in a penal colony is deteriorating, and his transfer to a hospital is being delayed, a mother of the prisoner reports.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 16, 2020, a court found Elchin Mamed guilty of theft and illegal possession of weapons and sentenced him to four years of imprisonment. On February 20, the court of appeal upheld the verdict without considering “obvious inconsistencies,” an advocate said.
In March, the prisoner’s mother reported that Elchin Mamed suffered from pain in his legs, experienced difficulties with walking, and needed a medical examination. The prisoner described the conducted medical examination as superficial and insisted on hospitalization.
Elchin Mamed was arrested on “trumped-up charges” after he had posted critical material on the Internet about the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, the “Amnesty International” (AI) stated.
In recent days, Elchin Mamed has been experiencing sleep disorder, and his pain has worsened because of his chronic diseases, says Rakhilya Mamedova, the mother of the activist. The woman notes that medical officers visit Mamed, “but it is impossible to provide him with real help without prescribing specific treatment.”
