Rights defenders worried about disappearance of Nurmagomed Mamuev in Chechnya

The search for a native of Chechnya, deported from Germany and handed over to Chechen law enforcers has yielded no results yet, but human rights defenders continue searching for him, Oleg Orlov has stated. As a rule, a kidnapped person is forced to confess by means of threats and violence, and only after that relatives can learn about his fate, Magomed Alamov said.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Nurmagomed Mamuev was detained in Berlin on March 24. He was deported to Chechnya; and on March 26, unknown persons took him away from his house.

Oleg Orlov, a board member of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial"*, has noted that residents of Chechnya very rarely turn to them for help.

The disappearance of the Chechens deported to Russia has not become a system in recent years, but a number of cases have worried human rights defenders, said Magomed Alamov, the head of the North-Caucasian branch of the Committee against Torture (CaT).

He gave the example of Baiduev, who, after returning to Chechnya, was kidnapped and found at the police station. At this point, "he had made confessions."
