Two Azerbaijani citizens suspected of links with militants

The State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan has detained Mansur Djumaev and Nasir Djakhangirov on suspicion of participation in hostilities abroad; both have pleaded guilty, the SSS has informed.

According to investigators, Djumaev and Djakhangirov left Azerbaijan in 2011 to join an illegal armed formation (IAF). Having illegally entered the territory of a foreign state, they joined a criminal formation operating there, headed by a man nicknamed "Salakhaddin". As members of this IAF, Djumaev and Djakhangirov took part in military exercises and operations, the SSS has added.

A case was initiated against the detainees under Articles 12.1 and 279.1 of the Azerbaijan Criminal Code (participation in IAFs outside the country). Both have been arrested by the court. In the course of the inquiry, the defendants pleaded guilty and repented of their deeds, the SSS has informed, not specifying the country where the suspects had fought.

According to Tofig Tyurkel, an observer for the "Turan" News Agency on religious issues, as a rule, Azerbaijani citizens left to take part in hostilities in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. "We are talking about the believers who fell under the influence of the so-called propagandists of radical trends in Islam," he told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
