Armenia demands from ECtHR to protect its POWs' rights in Azerbaijan

The Armenia's representative at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has demanded to ensure the defence of the rights to life and from torture of the Armenian militaries, who were captured and became prisoners of war (POWs) on November 16.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 16, armed clashes broke out on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, which ended after negotiations of the parties with the Russian Defence Minister. Azerbaijan reported the death of seven servicemen and about 10 wounded persons; Armenia reported one casualty. According to the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD), 13 soldiers became POWs; 24 others are still missing. Azerbaijan has handed the bodies of three perished servicemen over to Armenia.

The Armenia's representative at the ECtHR has appealed to the Court with a demand to ensure the protection of the fundamental rights of the Armenian POWs, captured during the hostilities on November 16, says the statement posted on the representative's official Facebook page.

"An appeal has been submitted to the ECtHR on application of interim measures against Azerbaijan in accordance with Rule 39 [of the Regulations] of the ECtHR. This step is intended to ensure the protection of the right to life and against torture, provided for by the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)," says the statement, posted on November 22.
