Dagestan Ombudsperson indicates problems with adaptation among children who returned from Syria

After the return of children from Syria, they have problems with social adaptation, since they had been under the influence of the extremist ideology for a long time; they didn't go to school and received no medical treatment, said Marina Yezhova, the Children's Ombudsperson in Dagestan. Dagestani authorities have reported about the training for the specialists in charge of social adaptation of the children returned from zones of armed conflict.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the office of the Children's Ombudsperson repeatedly informed about the return of children from Syria and Iraq to Russia. Thus, in April 2021, a total of 44 children were transported from the Middle East, including the children-natives of Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria and Stavropol Territory. Another aircraft with children landed in Moscow on December 16.

Marina Yezhova, who is the Ombudsperson under the Head of Dagestan in charge of protecting families, motherhood and childhood, said that since 2017, a total of 242 children have been returned to Dagestan from areas of military conflicts.

"There are more than 1800 people from Dagestan in the united database of the persons who had left to participate in armed conflicts. Overall, 1380 children are still in the camps there; the work to return them home continues," Ms Yezhova has stated.
