“Novaya Gazeta” suspends its activities
Today, after having received a warning from the “Roskomnadzor” (the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media), the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta” has announced the suspension of its publication until the end of the special military operation in Ukraine. The warning is connected with a violation of the law on foreign agents, the “Roskomnadzor” explains.
The newspaper “Novaya Gazeta” itself has announced today the suspension of its publication. “We got another warning from the ‘Roskomnadzor’. After that, we are suspending the publication of the newspaper on the website, in social media, and on paper until the end of the ‘special operation on the territory of Ukraine’,” reads the message on the “Novaya Gazeta” website, entitled “We are suspending our activities”.
Today, the “Roskomnadzor” has issued the second written warning to the editorial office and the founder of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta” for mentioning an NCO-foreign agent without labelling, the press service for the “Roskomnadzor” has explained.
Let us remind you that since the beginning of 2017, the “Novaya Gazeta” has been investigating the facts of mass arrests without trial, torture, executions, and “carbon-copy” convictions of more than 100 people in Chechnya.
Dmitry Muratov, the editor-in-chief of the “Novaya Gazeta”, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2021. The Nobel Committee emphasized the newspaper’s efforts “to protect freedom of expression.”
