Opposition reports about harsh detentions of activists in Yerevan

The police reported that 111 people were detained for disorderly conduct during an action held in front of the Armenian government building. The police used excessive force during the detentions, protesters say.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that today, the opposition has held a rally in front of the Armenian government building, and activists have tried to break into the building.

The situation escalated after one of the activists pushed a policeman, who fell down. As a result of a clash with the police, some activists were injured.

Among the detainees was Vage Sargsyan, the editor of the “Yerkir.am” publication. According to the activist, the police knocked him to the ground and beat him.

Arsen Babayan, a member of the political council of the “Motherland” Party, also spoke about the excessive use of force by the police. “One person was knocked to the ground and nine policemen stepped on him. Numerous protesters got injuries,” Arsen Babayan said as quoted by the “Aysor.am” publication.

During the detention, one of the law enforcers seized from behind a neck of Aram Vardevanyan, an MP from the “Hayastan” (Armenia) opposition bloc, the “News.Am” publication reports.

“Forcible methods will not stop the opposition,” stated Ishkhan Sagatelyan, the deputy speaker of the Armenian parliament.
