"Tribune": strike at "Borjomi" factories could affect labour relations in Georgia

Trade union activists and strikers at the "Borjomi" factories believe that their struggle may have consequences for the entire Georgian society and for the future of the trade union movement in the country, an article of the British "Tribune" magazine has suggested.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the strike of workers at two mineral water bottling factories located in the town of Borjomi has been going on since May 31. The strikers demand better working conditions and reinstate their laid-off comrades.

The strike has resonated far beyond the Caucasus, says the article "Georgian Spring in Borjomi" by Sarah Bradley, posted today on the website of the "Tribune" British magazine. The strikers at the Borjomi factories and their trade union believe that the outcomes of their struggle could have consequences for the entire Georgian society and for the future of the trade union movement in the country, they told the journalist. "We've already had the biggest impact. We've won [our strike] last year and that was an example for many. Even if we have no other way to win, we fight to the end. We understand that we can fail, but we are ready to this as well," Giorgi Diasamidze, the trade union leader, told the article author of the article. It is extremely important for the very future of Georgia and its workers that this is not the case, the author believes.
