Amid opposition's support, Abkhaz activists stop their hunger strike

Djansukh Adleiba, Vadim Markholiya and Daur Gunba stop their hunger strike and move on to other forms of protest. Their action has helped drawing public attention to the issue of handing over the Pitsunda state dacha to Russia, Adrug Ardzinba, the opposition spokesman, has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 22, Djansukh Adleiba, an activist, went on a hunger strike in Sukhumi demanding to reduce motor fuel prices and prevent the transfer of Abkhazian lands to Russia. During the five days of his action, more than 10,000 people signed a demand to reduce the price of gasoline in Abkhazia, but authorities failed to react to the protest action. The activists said they were going to switchover to a dry hunger strike demanding the resignation of the government.

On July 30, the hunger-strikers were visited by oppositional activists, including Timur Guliya, the chairman of the NGO "Aruaa" of veterans of the 1992-1993 Patriotic War of Abkhaz People, and Adgur Ardzinba, the chairman of the "Abkhaz People's Movement", who managed to persuade them to switchover to other forms of protest, the Telegram channel "DNews Abkhazia" has informed.

"We feel support, and we see like-minded people ... A step towards achieving the goal has already been taken – there is confrontation," Djansukh Adleiba said in a video posted on the "Respublika" Telegram channel.

Adgur Ardzinba has pointed out that it is necessary to consolidate the entire civil society on the issue of transferring the Pitsunda dacha.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since June 13, Djansukh Adleiba was on a hunger strike, demanding from the Abkhaz government to reduce prices for motor fuel. He explained his new hunger strike by the fact that gasoline prices in Abkhazia remain higher than those in Russia.
