Advocate of "Memorial"* to continue fight for building in Moscow
The "International Memorial"* intends to challenge the court ruling that has invalidated the deal on the transfer of the building in Moscow of the liquidated organization to the "Memorial" Scientific Research and Educational Centre (SR&EC). This was stated by Marina Agaltsova, an advocate with the "Memorial"*.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in September this year, at the demand of the Russian General Prosecutor's Office (GPO), the court arrested the office of the liquidated "International Memorial"* that had been legally donated to another organization. Besides, the personal bank accounts of Elena Zhemkova, the executive director of the liquidated "International Memorial"*, and Boris Belenkin, the executive director of the above SR&EC, were blocked. On October 7, the Tverskoi Court of Moscow invalidated the deal on the transfer of the building of the "International Memorial"* located in the Karetny Ryad Street to the SR&EC, rejecting the defence's requests to transfer the claim to arbitration or postpone the consideration thereof and ignoring its arguments about the legality of the deal.
The advocate has stated that "International Memorial"* intends to appeal against the court ruling.
According to Marina Agaltsova, the GPO justified its position by stating "that the SR&EC had not worked and is a non-functioning organization." "However, the SR&EC worked a lot in 2019-2021… But for some reason, the court decided that there was no such work, somehow it failed to notice it and found the deal as illegal," the advocate has explained.
The court ruling was announced on the day when it became known that the "Memorial"* became one of the laureates of the Nobel Peace Prize.
