Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognizes independence of Ichkeria
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a law recognizing the independence of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and recognized its territory as temporarily occupied by Russia. This decision was supported by 287 members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on July 11, Oleksiy Goncharenko and Musa Magomedov, members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, submitted to the parliament a draft resolution recognizing the independence of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.
The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria is an unrecognized separatist state formation (1991-2000), created after the collapse of the USSR on part of the territory of the former Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and liquidated by the Russian army during the second Chechen military campaign. Ichkeria was not recognized by any of the UN countries.
Today, the members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine have recognized Ichkeria as temporarily occupied by Russia and “condemned the genocide of the Chechen people.”
The “Caucasian Knot” has also reported that on February 26, Akhmed Zakaev, one of the leaders of the unrecognized Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, living in Great Britain, proposed to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to send migrants from Chechnya living in Europe to the war zone. On March 1, in turn, Ramzan Kadyrov threatened with reprisals against the natives of Chechnya, fighting on the side of Ukraine.
In October, it became known that field commander Rustam Azhiev joined forces with Akhmed Zakaev to push for the Chechnya’s independence, had arrived in Ukraine. Rustam Azhiev was appointed the deputy commander-in-chief of Ichkeria and awarded the rank of Colonel. The number of Chechen detachments fighting on the side of Ukraine is growing, and their combat experience is in demand, sources report.
On September 21, Ramzan Kadyrov announced that he was ready to “get” Akhmed Zakaev at any cost and suggested natives of Chechnya to kill the politician in exchange for a pardon and return to Chechnya.
