Human rights defenders claim violation of rights of a convict from Ingushetia

Abdul-Malik Albagachiev, a native of Ingushetia, who is serving his sentence in the Astrakhan Region, is not provided with proper medical care, and he is also regularly placed in a ShIZO (punishment cell), the “Public Verdict Foundation”* reports.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 24, 2022, at a picket held in front of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Astrakhan Region, human rights defender Zarema Barakhoeva claimed that the rights of Abdul-Malik Albagachiev had been violated. The man is being subjected to unreasonable punishments in the penal colony, and law enforcers thus put pressure on him, complains Marzhan Albagachieva, a mother of the convict.

In August 2018, Abdul-Malik Albagachiev was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment. According to the investigators’ version, since January 2015, the man fought in Syria against the government troops, and after returning to Russia, he kept an improvised grenade with him.

Abdul-Malik Albagachiev is serving his sentence in the penal colony in the Astrakhan Region, where he was transferred after treatment in a prison hospital. The man has an iron plate in his collarbone that should have been removed a long time ago, but prison doctors do not send him to the hospital for surgery. During all this time, Abdul-Malik Albagachiev is limited in his movements, because his right hand stays in a bandage.

The health state of Abdul-Malik Albagachiev was undermined by torture, the human rights defenders report. According to the defence, the law enforcers tried to force Abdul-Malik Albagachiev to confess that he had fought in Syria for the “Islamic State” (IS, a terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court, – note of the “Caucasian Knot”).

The human rights defenders recalled that a criminal case was instituted after Abdul-Malik Albagachiev had filed a complaint about torture, but the investigation was suspended, since the law enforcer pointed out by Abdul-Malik Albagachiev as involved in torture perished.
