ECtHR awards compensation to activist from Minvody for his arrest

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg has found a violation of the rights of Mikhail Nazarenko, a resident of the Stavropol Territory, who was arrested after a spontaneous gathering in the city of Mineralnye Vody (Minvody) held in 2015. The activist has been awarded 5000 euros in compensation, although Russia had refused to enforce ECtHR's decisions.

In January 2015, Minvody townspeople, outraged by the murder of a military man during a mass brawl in a café, blocked the motor traffic along the "Kavkaz" Highway. Several protesters were arrested. Mikhail Nazarenko, a lawyer and the leader of the human rights movement "Sword of the Law", was arrested by the court for five days.

At night on January 21, 2015, Dmitry Sidorenko, a military serviceman, died as a result of a brawl in Minvody in which he was stabbed. In February 2016, a court sentenced three participants in the brawl; and only one of them was found guilty of committing the murder.

The ECtHR has declared a violation of Mr Nazarenko's right to a fair trial, when considering his case on taking part in the above unsanctioned gathering.
