Canada imposes sanctions against Children's Ombudspersons of two regions in Southern Russia
Marina Yezhova, the Commissioner for Children's Rights (Ombudsperson) in Dagestan, as well as Svetlana Adamenko, her colleague from the Stavropol Territory, have got under Canadian sanctions.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that this February, Ukrainian authorities imposed sanctions against Marina Yezhova, the Dagestani Children's Ombudsperson.
Both women are accused of illegal removal of children from Ukraine.
Apart from Yezhova and Adamenko, 42 individuals and 21 legal entities have been put under Canadian sanctions, including the "Yunarmiya" (Youth Army), the Valdai Club, the Council on Foreign and Defence Policy and a number of other near-Kremlin research centres. The sanctions have also affected Nikita Nagorny, an Olympic champion in gymnastics from Rostov-on-Don, who heads the main "Yunarmiya" office, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project has noted.
Earlier, sanctions were repeatedly introduced against the heads of Southern Russian regions and republics of Northern Caucasus. Thus, on February 24, 2023, it became known that the US Treasury had added to the sanctions list the following regional leaders: Igor Babushkin, the Governor of the Astrakhan Region; Makhmud-Ali Kalimatov, the head of Ingushetia; Batu Khasikov, the head of Kalmykia; Kazbek Kokov, the head of Kabardino-Balkaria; Veniamin Kondratiev, the Governor of the Krasnodar Territory; Murat Kumpilov, the head of Adygea; Sergey Melikov, the head of Dagestan; and Rashid Temrezov, the head of Karachay-Cherkessia.
