Schoolgirls wearing hijabs allowed to attend classes in Zalukokoazhe

In the village of Zalukokoazhe, a school administration allowed Muslim schoolgirls wearing hijabs to attend classes after a public outcry caused by a ban on religious clothing. Schools do not have the right to prohibit schoolgirls from wearing hijabs, such discrimination violates children’s constitutional rights to freedom of religion and access to education, emphasize a lawyer and human rights defender.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in several villages of Kabardino-Balkaria, girls wearing hijabs were not allowed into schools, as follows from the videos posted on the Internet. Social media users expressed their indignation by such practice, and the Muftiate of Kabardino-Balkaria announced that it had convinced officials not to prevent schoolgirls from wearing hijabs.

The problem of schoolgirls wearing hijabs has been solved thanks to public outcry, reports Rizuan Makoev, the imam of the village of Zalukokoazhe in the Zolsky District of Kabardino-Balkaria.

According to him, the school administration refused to allow schoolgirls wearing hijabs until the corresponding instructions were received from the administration of the leader of the republic.

Former imam Akhmad Anchikhsky was surprised by the ban on religious clothing in a school, especially in a Muslim region. Akhmad Anchikhsky believes that parents and children have the right to come to school in the form that their religion dictates.

Human rights defender Zaur Shokuev notes that the ban on wearing religious clothing in schools in Kabardino-Balkaria is not widespread. The human rights defender has also found it strange that the problem arose in settlements where mainly Muslims lived.

Lawyer Aza Alieva considers the ban on schoolgirls wearing hijabs in an educational institution to be discrimination. The charter of the school may not contradict the Constitution of the Russian Federation, emphasizes the lawyer.
