Social media users outraged by ban on schoolgirls to wearing hijabs at lessons in KBR

In several villages of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), girls wearing hijabs were not allowed into schools; it follows from posted videos. Social network users were outraged by this practice; and the republic's Muftiate has announced that it had convinced officials not to prevent schoolgirls from wearing hijabs.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 2, 2022, it became known about a scandal at a school in Tyumen, where a native of Dagestan was refused to be allowed to attend classes with her hijab on. The tearful girl was able to get to class after a squabble between her parents and the director.

Schoolchildren's parents have contacted the KBR's Muftiate about the possibility of wearing hijabs (headscarves) in the republic's educational institutions, the republic's Muftiate has reported on the Instagram*.

The videos posted in the "VKontakte" social network about schoolgirls in hijab being denied access to lessons have outraged social network users. Many commentators stood up for the girls.

"The Constitution enshrines the right to choose one's faith. In Moscow, children wear hijabs, but here, in a Muslim republic, they are ready to tear a girl wearing a headscarf," the user zhankazieval was indignant.

"This is everyone's choice; and no one has the right to decide for someone else! Who are these statutes for if they infringe on people of a certain faith?" the user aneta_sh has written.

Not allowing children to go to school because of wearing hijabs is contrary to the Constitution, Ruslan Nagiev, a lawyer, has pointed out.

Let us recall that on January 11, 2023, five female students, including natives of Dagestan and Chechnya, were expelled from a college in Novocherkassk for wearing hijabs. The situation was resolved without court; and the publicity of the incident played a decisive role therein.

*On March 21, 2022, the Tverskoi Court of Moscow banned the activities in Russia of the Meta Company, owning the Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, in connection with extremist activities.
