Jehovah’s Witness* from Karachay-Cherkessia recognized as a political prisoner
The “Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial” human rights project recognized Jehovah’s Witness* Rimma Popova from Cherkessk, who was arrested on the charge of extremism, as a political prisoner.
On October 12, the police reported the detention of the 55-year-old Jehovah’s Witness* in a criminal case on participation in activities and recruitment into a religious organization. The woman was placed under house arrest.
According to the investigators’ version, Rimma Popova talked to other people, trying to convince them of the need to accept the religion of Jehovah’s Witnesses* and promoting its superiority over others. The investigators also suggest that Rimma Popova were organizing meetings and worship services at which she conducted classes on the study of illegal religious activities and books. According to the case materials, the resident of Cherkessk managed to persuade her acquaintance to become a member of the banned organization.
The “Caucasian Knot” has also reported that in Karachay-Cherkessia, a court found Jehovah’s Witness* Irina Perefilieva guilty of extremism and punished her with a suspended sentence.
*396 Russian organizations of Jehovah’s Witnesses are recognized as extremist, and their activities in Russia are banned by court’s decision.
