Nalchik townspeople commemorate Balkars on the 80th deportation anniversary
On the 80th anniversary of deportation of Balkar nationals, actions in memory of the victims thereof were held in Nalchik (the capital of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR)). An exhibition of archival documents and personal belongings of those repressed has opened at the "Memorial to the Repression Victims of the Balkar People".
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 8, the KBR marks the anniversary of the deportation of the Balkar people. This year, activists applied for a rally in memory of deportation victims, but authorities have invited them to join official actions.
An updated exhibition has opened in the above Memorial, the State TV and Radio Broadcasting Company (GTRK) "Kabardino-Balkaria" has reported. "Personal belongings of the Balkars, who were in exile, photos and archival documents are kept here. The sculpture 'Mother's Happiness' occupies a special place," the report says.
On March 8, it is customary in the KBR to visit the tombs of the relatives who had survived deportation; and elders tell the younger generation about their deportation experiences, local residents are reporting.
