ECtHR finds rights violation of activist from Prokhladny

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ordered Russian authorities to pay compensation to Anastasia Emelianova, an activist, who was fined within the case of calls for a protest action. The decision was made amid Russia's refusal to enforce ECtHR's decisions.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 22, 2021, the Supreme Court of Kabardino-Balkaria ruled to treat the repeated prosecution of Anastasia Emelianova for organizing a rally in support of Alexei Navalny in the town of Prokhladny and the fine of 75,000 roubles imposed on her as legitimate.

Anastasia was detained on January 23, 2021, and prosecuted for announcing a "meeting of friends," which the court treated as organization of an unsanctioned rally in support of Navalny, and a "vegetable picket," a video showing vegetables with signs on sticks. The court in Prokhladny then imposed a fine on her.

The ECtHR has recognized violations of Emelianova's rights and obliged Russian authorities to pay her compensation of EUR 4900, the court's website reports.

Anastasia Emelianova took part in oppositional protests and declared violations of the rights of those residents of Kabardino-Balkaria who turned to her for help. She drew media attention to the problems of Elena Katkova, a resident of Prokhladny, who huddled in a hostel with her six children, where there was no place to make laundry and bathe the children and the electricity was cut off for several months.
